Often when a business starts to consider implementing an artificial\nintelligence project they think only about the technology but fail to consider\nthe business practices and human side of the equation.  While they are busy forecasting ROI and trying\nto get budgets approved, they must also consider the need to train employees\nand other human elements that will help make their AI project and\nimplementation successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In PwC\u2019s 2020\nAI Predictions report<\/a>, PwC recommends five priorities to include as part of\nyour  AI projects in 2020: get on board\nwith boring AI, rethink upskilling, lead on risk and responsibility, operationalize\nAI \u2014 integrated and at scale, and reinvent your business model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within their report, they then make several specific suggestions\nthat if utilized, can help increase the chances of your project being a\nsuccess. Here are some of their best suggestions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be Strategic<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start your project by identifying where AI can have the\ngreatest business impact within your organization. From there, you must choose\nto build the capabilities required to succeed. Not all of these capabilities\nneed to be internal, as partnering with other companies, such as Artificial\nIntelligence Developers<\/a>, can enhance your chances of success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Often the best use of artificial intelligence can be to\ntackle tasks that humans do not want to do anyway, such as extracting\ninformation from forms, invoices, and other documentation. Also, look for\nopportunities to utilize AI by looking for simple tasks that occur across your\norganization where you have the opportunity to reuse the AI for multiple\nsolutions.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Upskill<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For AI to be a success within your organization, you must\neducate your staff in a way that benefits the business. Start by identifying\nwhat skills are needed for AI to be a success and then give employees across\nthe organization an opportunity to learn these skills, but this needs to be\nmore than just offering training courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You must also give employees that complete the training\nprograms the opportunity to apply what they\u2019ve learned. This way their new\nknowledge can be turned into real-world skills that improve performance.\nIncentivizing the application of these new skills will increase adoption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create an AI Culture<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI has a better chance of succeeding in your organization if\nyou create a new culture. Organizational leaders should start by setting a direction\nand establishing goals, but then they should stand back and let the people with\nthe organization \u201crun with the ball\u201d. After giving employees the training and tools\nto succeed, employees will generally come up with the best suggestions for\nleveraging AI to increase productivity or revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure you address any fears your employees have and make\nsure they understand that as AI takes tedious tasks off their plates, it will\ngive them an opportunity to focus on performing higher-value work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governance <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For AI to be truly effective it requires businesses to trust\nthe recommendations of the algorithms. Trust is built through effective,\nwell-thought-out governance. A comprehensive governance program will provide\nsupport at each step of your AI implementation. It should not only anticipate\nrisks and but also provide quality controls along every step of the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your governance program should consider not only who is\naccountable but if the AI aligns with business strategy. Additionally, your\nprogram should evaluate what processes can be modified to improve the outputs. Create\nspecific responsibilities to track performance and pinpoint problems. Remember\nthat it is possible to automate many governance tasks and processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trustworthy Data<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your AI is going to be effective you must ensure that you\ncan trust your data. That means that your data must be more than accurate, it\nmust also be labeled, standardize, bias-free, compliant and secure. If you\ndon\u2019t trust your data, you will not be able to trust the models based on that\ndata. It is essential that you are relentless in your data practices to ensure\nyou get the best results from your artificial intelligence applications. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure you consider integrating data from across all\ndepartments from within your organization to create a more complete and\nholistic view.  Additionally, you should\nplan ahead to integrate your AI system with your analytics tools and other tech\nsystems, such as any IoT applications you have in operation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Revisit your Business\nModel<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Artificial intelligence will help automate tasks and will assist\nand augment your workforce and decision-making. As your AI program gets started,\nmake sure you regularly evaluate the value being generated and determine how\nyou will utilize this asset and its value as part of your business model.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember that artificial intelligence is not a silver bullet\nor a one-off solution, AI should be part of your broader business strategy that\nhelps you improve processes across your organization. While the impact may be incremental\nat first, you will quickly discover it can be transformative as AI\u2019s usage\ngrows within your business model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
